A compressor motor shell starts as a flat circular blank and ends as a deep cylindrical cup with a wall that is thinner than the starting sheet. Getting from one to the other requires more than just drawing - it requires ironing, where the material is forced through a slightly smaller die ring to reduce wall thickness. Our die does both operations in sequence, with the ironing stations placed after the main drawing stations.
Wall thickness uniformity is the critical quality characteristic for motor shells. If the wall is thicker on one side, the motor will vibrate when it spins. We control this by using a self-centering blank holder that equalizes material flow in all directions. The drawing punch is also ground to a concentricity tolerance of 0.01 mm, so the cup forms symmetrically around the punch axis.
The final station in the die trims the open end of the shell to a precise length. This trim is done in the die rather than in a separate operation, which saves a handling step and avoids the risk of deforming the shell after drawing. We test each deep drawing die with your actual material grade and thickness, and we provide a wall thickness map of the finished shell along with the tool.
