Can deep drawing stamping dies be fabricated free of polishing and other abrasive finishing steps?

Based on my practical experience, high-precision machining serves as the dominant alternative:
1.Five-axis CNC machine tools: They enable one-setup high-precision machining of complex curved surfaces, eliminating the need for extensive manual finishing from the start.
2.Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) and Wire Electrical Discharge Machining (Wire EDM): Both processes are ideal for intricate features typical of deep-drawing dies, such as deep recesses and narrow slots, delivering micron-level accuracy. Wire EDM is widely adopted for precise profile cutting, while sinker EDM is used to fabricate complex die cavities.
3.Ultrasonic polishing: This is a highly efficient post-treatment method for rapid surface quality enhancement. Though it falls under abrasive finishing, it outperforms manual polishing in both efficiency and final surface quality.
While total elimination of polishing processes is impractical, modern mold fabrication technologies provide multiple solutions to cut down on or substitute conventional hand polishing:
The most viable production method at present combines high-precision CNC machining and electrical discharge machining (EDM) with ultrasonic polishing. This workflow drastically cuts back on hand polishing workload while guaranteeing consistent dimensional accuracy for metal stamping dies.
Looking ahead, emerging technologies including 3D printing and advanced new materials may fundamentally revolutionize manufacturing workflows within the stamping sector.
