Common Causes of Auxiliary Switch Contact Failure

I. Mechanical Causes

1. Contact Wear
During long-term use, the contacts of an auxiliary switch constantly open and close. Frequent opening and closing operations cause gradual wear on the contact surface, increasing contact resistance and even preventing effective contact, thus leading to a failure to close the auxiliary switch contacts. For example, in equipment with frequent starts and stops, the contacts of the auxiliary switch become severely worn after prolonged use, affecting normal circuit continuity.

2. Spring Failure
Auxiliary switches typically rely on the elasticity of a spring to open and close the contacts. If the spring becomes fatigued, deformed, or broken after prolonged use, it can no longer provide sufficient pressure to the contacts, resulting in loose contact and a failure to close the contacts. For example, in harsh working environments, corrosion or external forces can reduce the elasticity of the spring, preventing the auxiliary switch contacts from closing properly.

3. Mechanical Jamming
Accumulation of dust and impurities, or problems with the mechanical structure of the auxiliary switch itself, may obstruct the movement of the contacts, causing mechanical jamming. In this case, the contacts cannot accurately reach the predetermined position, resulting in a lack of contact. For example, in harsh industrial environments, dust can easily enter the auxiliary switch, and its accumulation can affect its normal operation.

II. Electrical Causes

1. Coil Failure
The operation of the auxiliary switch often relies on the electromagnetic force generated by the coil. When the coil experiences an open circuit, short circuit, or burnout, it cannot generate sufficient electromagnetic force to drive the contacts, resulting in a lack of contact. For example, if the coil is under prolonged overload, it may burn out due to overheating, causing the auxiliary switch to lose its control function.

2. Power Supply Issues
An unstable power supply is also a common cause of contact failure in auxiliary switches. If the power supply voltage is too low, too high, or fluctuates, it may affect the normal operation of the auxiliary switch. For example, when the power supply voltage is lower than the rated operating voltage of the auxiliary switch, the magnetic force generated by the coil is insufficient to reliably close the contacts; conversely, when the power supply voltage is too high, it may damage the electronic components of the auxiliary switch, causing the contacts to fail to close.
